In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Unlike the work of other artist's, for example Vance Joy, we have created a video that is mysterious in terms of the story line. Athough we have planned out the camera shots we have used we thought that the song was questionable towards what the story line was. This allowed the audience to come up with their own story, along with our interpratation and aim which was to allow the audience too see that Izzy( the lip singer) is falling in love with Anna, who is in love with Matty. In the video this creates question toward that of challenging the conventions of a modern day music video as the narrative to the videos today are told or seen through the camera shots, styling and location.

Music Video- How it uses conventions
Music Video
1- There are three main music videos which we used conventions of from each. They are Vance Joy- Riptide, Bondax- All I see and Shift K£Y- All I Know.
Vance Joy- Riptide

Bondax- All I See

Shift K£y- I Know

I decided to look at the original video of where the actor in Vance Joy physically shows that she 'has a lump in her throat'. This is done by the lyrics being shown on the screen as well as the defined facial expressions. Although we didn't use the lyrics on screen, we decided to match the lyrics to an action and had Izzy physically doing this with her hands. This is using the idea of Vance Joy, but challening it by using our own interpretation.
Here, i used the close up shot of the lip singing part, which allows the viewer too undertsand the jealousy of Izzy towards the other actor, Anna. This creates an intimate effect as she uses similar facial expressions to Vance Joy to show her comfused and updet anxiety. Izzy similiarlry uses very serious facial expressions and doesnt show any emotions which keeps the audience induced and interested in the video until the very end.
In this shot, my intention was to show the audience that Anna the actor in our video, is running away from reality and just wants to be free away from any worries or issues she may have. This is similair to Vance Joy's version, where she is also running awat from worries and issues that she has. I feel that this convention is very effective as it enables the video to have a clear structure of the confusion of love between: Anna, Izzy and Matty.
Vance Joy use the shot of the Cowboy, when the song is on the part of the lyrics "This cowboy's running from himself" to suggest that there is a sign ofstress due to him running away from his problems. This is also matching the lyrics making it more narrative, which is our style to the music video. We were influenced by this covention as it allowed us to match the action to the lyric; this was shown on a TV screen when Anna and Matty were watching it to convey the theme of love throoughout.
Bondax use a behind the shoulder shot, where the actor is placed on screen with his back to the camera. I think this effective as it allows the audience to feel like they are on part of the journey with him, as the camera also follows his movement. We have used this shot and were influenced by Bondax using it in "All I See", as we wanted the sa,e effect of it seeming like the camera was following our actor Anna and her horse, to fit in with the storyline of Izzy being the follower.
We were inspired by this simple shot of the green grass, as it allows the audience to be able too see a variety of shots that differ but also tie in with the theme of the video. We decided to use this shot as it fits in with the rural theme of the video, as we have filmed in rural areas such as the forest and a park. This then contrasts with the other location of the beach, which means that we are able to have a contrast of shots with different locations, rater than focusing on one location which would seem repetative and mundain.
Here, we were influenced by the great use of the overlap of different shots on top of each other. The overlap on the video "All I See", by Bondax, shows thier chosen location on the under layer with the actors on to to show the contrast; this makes the viewer more interested as there is more to watch in the video. We used these conventions from this music video, as we felt that we could gain more interest in our video as it makes it seem a lot more inviting and also adds more importance to the storryline.
The simple logo of 'BONDAX', on "ALL I SEE", shows credit to the band. However, we felt that it would make more sense if we used the song title rather than the artist, so we challenged this particullar convention. We decided to do this as our location of the beach is related to the song title of 'RIPTIDE', because of the beach and the sea. It also challnges Bondax's convention as we decided to do this by hand rather than animated, in order for it to seem more realistic and relatable to our storyline.
'SHIFT K£Y' have decided to use a storyline of a girl walking around different locations, in which the camera follows her, to show the story of her finding her lover at the end of the video. We were inspired by this, as we wanted to show a clear love story that relates to the modern societal view on love between the same sex, jealousy and portrayal. This particular shot from 'I Know', allowed us to use the convention to create a shot between Anna and Matty, where Anna would show him that she loves him at this point, rater then Izzy who is in love with Anna.
Music Video- How It Challenges Conventions
Although we wanted to use the theme of a storyline showing a narritive, we wanted to make sure that we were challenging some parts of our insperation videos in order for our twist of 'lesbian' lovers to really allow the viewer to see how the theme of love still stays, but how different lovers become jealous of eachother. There wasn't really any videos we were infleunced by to show the lesbian attaraction from Izzy, so we decided to challenge conventions from real music videos to enable us to make a modern and unique video that will attract many viewers as challenging hetrosexual love is the norm in society nowadays.

When we were filming the parts of Izzy to put on our video, we made sure that she looked particullary masculine so that we could allow our aim of Anna finding her attractive to tie in well. We decided to dress her in denim clothes, including a denim jacket with denim jeans. Her hair was down and un brushed, so that she looked stressed an angry. However, by her hair being down it added a feminine element to her look so that she seemed attractive to Anna, in order to contrast with her masucline clothes.

Challenging Conventions...

Our music video challenges the conventions of Taylor Swifts Video, 'Love Story'. In this video, Taylor is wearing majestic ocstume, with a typical 'Princess' kind of dress, in which the producer has decided to follow; the video is shown as Taylor as the Princess and the male actor as the Prince, hence the lyrics 'You'll be the Prince and i'll be the Princess'. However, we have challenged this convention by having our actors play a discreet kind of love story, which isn't shown through the use of costume.

Digi-Pack - How it uses conventions
Digi-Pack
There are lots of similar things on album covers no matter what the genre of music. There has to be a basic few rules to follow to get all the correct information on the cover and still being able to make it intresting and apealing.
-
First of all there is a photograp or several of the artist or and imagine of something to do with the artist.
-
Then there is nearly always the artists name.
-
A song/ablum title.
-
Then there is usually information on the back to do with the song names.
-
Internet information for social networks also there could be a website adress for the artist.
For insperation, we looked at different digi-packs so that we were certain on how we wanted our digi-pack to look. We looked at Bondax's digi-pack and we liked how they used animated imges made from on screen and then used as a layer on top of the original image. We decided to use this idea, as we felt that it would also tie in well with adding different layers in the music video. Our digi-pack uses the conventions of Bondax's didgi-pack, as we have used the original images of a model's head and then added different animations on top of it; these are different shapes which include different patters. This is similair to Bondax's digi-pack, as they have images of hills that then have another layer including shapes and colours.

How is challenges coventions...

Our Digi-pack...
Bondax' Digi-pack...
These are some examples of other digi-packs that have been created when the musci video has been published. However, our digi-pack differs a lot from these types of digi-packs as they have used original images that havent been edited to a great deal or used for an under layer so that it is able to add more creativity. On Ellie Goulding's digi-pack (left), she has used the original images that haven't been edited like we did with ours for us to be able to add more layers including different shapes within them. She has also listed the songs of her album which differs from ours as we have only used parts of the lyrics on our digi-pack. The digi-pack on the right, Rihanna, also differs from our digi-pack meanign that ours does challenge it; this is again because it doesn't have any added layers and just simply consists of the original images. The only similairty that this has with our digi-pack is the name of the album, but this is quickly challenged due to the differ in font and overall style of the digi-pack.

Codes and Conventions
-
Bright/colouful, to attract attention
-
Title of artist/album title/arists name
-
Quotes promoting the album
-
Usually portrate, easy to fit in music magazines ect
-
Photograph to do with the artist or album
I wanted to use common conventions when creating my advertisement because the aim of it is to sell the ablum and the advertisement which are already out there do that well, therefore I wanted to use these codes and conventions to sell my artists album.
The final product shows that we have used real conventions from other products, such as the BONDAX poster next to our YOUNK FOLKS poster. This is conventions such as the large, bold text which we feel reallt made the title seem creative and appropitate to our target audience. Also, the bright colours are conventions that were heavily influenced by as well as the use of the images being layered and changed into different conventions, likewise to Bondax.
